complaints about education

slashdot has a post linking to an article from a self-professed engineering washout. The author goes on to talk about how badly his highly touted school educated him.

A couple of things stand out

  • One is from Moneyball. Billy Beane says that being a prodigal player in high school never taught him one thing: how to fail. When he was faced with adversity, he crumpled.
  • Any of us who have been through college have had professors that we had difficulty learning from
  • If a weed-out class weeded you out, then it did it’s job.

Sometimes the truth hurts. I went to two quarters of grad school, and after getting my ass kicked in four courses, I learned to live with the idea that I would just have a 4-year degree. Getting a quality education in a specific field is not a god-given right. It is a decision you make. If you can’t live up to the expectations, then you will need to find a more suitable field of study.
