New Year’s Career Introspective

I guess it’s time to start looking at what we should be thinking about the new year.

John Epperheimer had a nice little self evaluation article. The on-line version was a little different than the print article, which I have scanned for posterity. This got me to thinking about a lot of things.

Changing stuff around

In the interest of being someone efficient with my server usage, I’m going to be moving a few things around.  Like consolidating all images in the tokubo.com gallery.  I need to start doing this just so I can better manage the site and get rid of all of the old legacy stuff.

Bobby Knight is…

Eloquent

A caring coach  (read his lips: he says “Pick your head up”)
Just like a lot of people

Bobby Knight is ready to be the all-time “winningest” coach in NCAA history.  In the grand scheme of things, what does it really mean?  Not much, unless you really like basketball and for some reason it’s better than taking care of the homeless, making the world a better place, ending wars, etc.  (This coming from a guy who’s job it is to put little pieces of silicon into things to we can see things like this pointless blog better.)

Bad geek…

*Sigh*

In the ever changing world of new tools, etc. I had setup my Thunderbird email client to sync with Yahoo mail via Ypops! (a cool little program). I found that I needed to change a timeout to make it work right. However, right when I did, it proceeded to download and erase all of the emails from my Yahoo account. It’s okay… The Yahoo! account has only been open for 5 years… crap…

I think I finally got my tokubo.com email figured out. Gmail lets you forward emails, use it as a forwarding agent, just about everything.

I can’t believe I sync’d 6 years of email with no way of loading back to the server. It was nice from time to time, because I had some contact info stored there, but now I’m gonna have to go and actually go out of my way to start organizing that.

I called the first headhunter I’ve talked to in over 5 years, and confirmed my thoughts.  I actually do like my job.  Granted, he was offering me basically a lateral move, but I really do like the people I work with, the technology and the general company.  Am I getting old?

Adventures in updating

Everything can be updated now. I update drivers on my PC. I patch my OS. I upgrade the firmware on my PSP. I have now upgraded the firmware on my phone for the first time in my life.

I’ve had the Nokia E61 for the past few months (my fourth GSM phone and third smartphone over this year). Despite horror stories, I decided to go for it.
Things I still need to try:

- GPRS / EDGE modem functionality (This is pretty cool and easy with Nokia’s tools, under WinXP)
- 3G over in Japan

- Playing with the WLAN for the part

Things seem to be working okay, so we’ll see!!!
